I used to have a huge selection of make up products, to be precise two big boxes, and I was not aware what exactly I have. As a teenager I did not like to throw away anything 'just in case'. Three different primers that make my face very dry? Ten times more eye shadows in crazy yet gorgeous colours, that I used once? Almost not used creams that remember Christmas two years ago? You could find little wastes like this in my make up boxes. Now I just ask myself: What is the point to have make up that I will use only once and then it will clutter the space? I threw away boxes, bought one proper, white make up bag and started looking for products that work for me well.

I bought The Misinterpretation of Tara Jupp by Eva Rice for a pound. Quite frankly price was main reason for a purchase; price and fair amount of pages to read. I was not sure what to expect. I have never had a chance to read anything written by Eva Rice so it could be a nice surprise or a waste of money. I have heard about The Lost Art of Keeping Secrets but never had a chance to find time nor motivation to read it. There is no better way to cool yourself down after playing beach Volleyball than dipping into the cold, refreshing ocean. Calm water might look tempting to jump into, without an exception it is extremely important to follow a few guidelines. It can take less than 2 minutes to drown, so being vigilant is important.

Are you camping near a lake and have an incredible need to dive in headfirst as soon as you get there? Would you do a bungee jumping with a damaged rope? Because you as well might. I have seen too many people breaking their backs or necks, because for a split second they felt immortal and trusted that nothing will happen to them. It did. What they did not know, or chosen to ignore, was that there was a huge sign and a painted message telling them not to dive. In my experience it is because they are jumping from piers straight onto old wreckage and parts hidden deep in the water from old wooden structures. First off, it is important to know the features of the lakebed. If you cannot find them online, just ask anyone from the town/city you are spending your holidays in. I ask shop assistants, especially if they are older; assuming that they have children so they will be well informed what parts are safer. It may seem dramatic, but it is all too real.
The one I used to live and swim in was created by an ancient glacier. What does this mean? It simply means that as ice sheets were moving downhill, it formed a depression and gouge, which the melting ice filled in and created a lake. However, it also means that that there might be dramatic downslopes, and enormous rocks that you will have no idea exist unless you ask or check. The lake I am talking about was very unsafe, especially for kids, who just wanted to go a bit further than their parents allowed. There was 6 meters of gentle slope from the shore, safe to play and great for swimming lessons since it was only around a meter or so deep. However, after you passed the 6 meters mark you were a step away from a rapid 3 meters drop off. There was not information about this drop, only a flag you either would swim back to the shore from, or someone would help you, or you would simply drown if you started to struggle. Therefore, it is very important to also know how tired you are and if you will have the strength to get back to shore, especially if there are no lifeguards around; always make sure you have a bit over half of your energy so you can make the return swim. It is better not to play the hero and therefore swim parallel to the shore.
On top of exhaustion, you can also develop cramp. The best swimmers in the world have them and it is really hard to say when it will strike; no one is immune. During stress, you lose a lot of magnesium, which helps to prevent cramps. If you have had a stressful time before going on your holidays, you might want to check your magnesium levels. Stretch before swimming!
I have experienced cramps before in the middle of the lake on more than one occasion. They appeared from nowhere. What worked for me was piercing the place of a cramp with a safety pin, I know this sounds extreme but it works. Have a clean safety pin with you; otherwise, you might get blood poisoning.
Another reason to check the lake/seabed is to make sure there are no sharp objects. Unfortunately, people for some reason find the concept of taking their rubbish with themselves very abstract and throw stuff into water. Believe me deep cut in your feet is not the best way to start your holiday. Additionally this will give you a chance to check the water temperature. Jumping straight to a lake after a long sun tanning session is rather dangerous as cold water can cause a shock to your body. You can lose control over your body, panic, have problems with breathing, and develop hypothermia. Read more about Cold Shock.
If you ask me, swimming during a thunderstorm is one of the greatest and stupidest things I have ever done. Water is an excellent conductor of electricity. If you can see the light and count less than 30 seconds between hear it, the thunder is approximately 6 miles (10 km) away.
My personal preference is not to chew gum while swimming. You can not only choke, but it is also slightly disgusting. I never will or have been swimming after alcohol it is pretty obvious why it is not great idea, feet are going to the water first and always even if everyone is screaming DIVE, DIVE, DIVE, shower always after the swim. I do not like public swimming pools too much since I went once to a swimming pool and returned with chickenpox. What are the chances?!
What are your tips to stay safe in the water?
Summer is around the corner! How exciting! Times when white skin was desired and was a sign of a high social status are long time gone. Now in the postmodern Western world wealth (disposable income for holidays) tanned, glowing skin is associated with good health, attractiveness. Some Western girls around the world want to get a lovely golden skin tone, including myself (bring on my holidays!!). Sadly, I am closer to a red lobster after being in the sun or eventually I become a piglet after a hot bath. Therefore I learned, after a rather painful mistakes, how to prevent and take care burned skin to sooth those symptoms and relieve the pain.
Sunburn is the result of damaged skin that has been over exposed to ultraviolet light. Consequently your skin becomes red, too warm, sore, tender and at times itchy. It can increases the chances of skin cancer, so take care of yourself early on; prep before you go out will save you hours of misery. Do you have pale skin like I do? If you do, I am pretty convinced that you will have previously experienced sunburns in your life.
Before going for your holidays, it is great to prepare yourself, not only by getting a gorgeous bikini packing your bag and camera, but also by getting your skin ready. Start with exfoliating your skin for a wonderfully soft and smooth effect. I am personally obsessed with Soap & Glory foam, fruity body scrub. Moisturise your skin from outside, body butters are my choice, and from inside by drinking enough fluid. Water is always a good, and important, idea! Add a few leaves of mint, sliced pieces of orange, some lemon or strawberries to add extra flavour.
Your beach bag is ready, you are almost out of the door but did you use sunscreen? I get excited when I am on holidays, and since most of the sunscreens should be applied around 30 minutes before going out I always try to apply them first thing after my morning shower. If I forget, and I really have to leave in that moment (we all had this first day beach day feeling) I throw something over my arms to cover them up whilst they are exposed without sun screen to protect them. I love how a light chiffon throw/sarong/wrap kaftan dress can add so much more playfulness to a beach outfit. Take your sun screen with you to reapply it during the day and after each time you go for a swim.

Picking good sun screen can sometimes be tricky. My summer nightmares are heavy, smelly, sticky sun screens that I had to use as a child. As you can imagine, I am quite picky with my sun screen creams now. My favourite method of application is spraying it generously all over myself, Nuxe Sun Tanning Oil Face Body does a wonderful job without making me too sticky! If you prefer a more creamy consistency check Piz Buin Tan & Protect SPF 30. Additionally it should intensify your tan. Think about the SPF (Sun Protection Factor). I start my holidays with SPF 50, then going down to SPF 30. I do not tend to go lower than SPF 15. Sun screens do have an expiry date, so do not forget to check this before you buy a product.
Another way to protect yourself from burns is decreasing the time you are exposed to sun. The strongest sun is between 11 am and 3 pm so take your fashionable sun hat with you to avoid sunburn which can make you nauseous and cause heat illness. Have a water bottle near by to stay hydrated. Watermelon will also do the job and it is delicious!
