6 Tips to Organise Your Calendar or Planner

Have you bought calendar or organiser in the hope that this purchase will improve your organisational skills? Writing down tasks and appointments is something I always do to keep track of important things. I bought my calendar in 2015 from Paperchase. If you are in USA try 1canoe2. They offer really pretty, minimalistic planners. One of them is on my wish list.

One Calendar/Planner

Although there are so many beautiful options, I was tempted to buy more than one planners or calendars for myself, I tend to stick to one. In the past I had more but I was not using them. Actually, I would miss some of my appointments due to checking only one calendar. To save myself confusion I have stick to only one now.

Three Priorities of a Day

What is the most important thing you should do today? Finishing your essay? Booking a doctor appointment or planning holidays? Write it down as a priority and do it. No excuses. My priorities cannot be rescheduled and are marked in red.

Daily Checklist

Night before I write down tasks and activities for the next day. Some of them can be rescheduled but I am trying to achieve them all without stressing myself too much. As much as I want to be  superwoman, sometimes I allow myself to have easier days.

Colour Coding

To make your planners more visually appealing use colourful pens to code tasks and activities. I believe that the brighter the better. Who doesn't like bright and easy to spot things?
Do not worry, you might only use three colours.

Colours' meaning in my calendar:
Red - Appointments/Deadlines
Pink - Friends/Family
Blue - University
Green - Work related things
Yellow - Fitness

Sticky Notes

Another fantastic way to highlight important tasks, birthdays, and events in the planner. Currently I use the one designed by Jonathan Adler. In USA I discovered Papyrus , great place to find cute stationary. They have pretty and reasonably priced stickers.
My cats are from Paperchase.

Highlighters

Highlight important days such as anniversaries, I like to colour the whole day, so they pop out even more. If you are not fan of highlighters but still want to personalise your planner try wash tape in UK from Hobby Craft.

Custom Stickers

I like them to track my fitness regime and progress. I track workout days when I felt amazing, and the ones that I did not push myself as much. At the end of the month I revise them, and if there was more blue days I think how can I change this. However, you can use them to mark anything starting from a reminder to water your plants to nights out! In UK I got them a few times from Amazon

Simplify Items For Organisation
Less items means less clutter that distract you. Sticky notes, colourful pens bring your calendar alive and make it yours. However too much can be overwhelming and make it harder for you to spot important things you should have done. Try to stick to colours you decided to use at least for a month.
Take Advantage of Commute Time

I usually fill my planner during the evening or while travelling on the bus. Actually, now when I think about it that is also the time when I write down possible ideas that I want to share with you here.
How do you like to organise your day and planner/calendar?

  1. I always used to colour code my diary for different subjects at school. Since finishing school I haven't even used a diary once, so unorganised! I was going to get one this year but I already missed a month haha!

    1. Hi Corinne, it's easier than you think. Especially when you have pretty planner that makes you happy. I am just so eager to use it when I like my planner. I remember having planner slightly cheaper, and forgetting about them in a first month just because I did not enjoy looking at them.

  9. I have a filofax at home but to be honest I now use a Calendar app on my phone and The Happiness Planner at home (which I still need to start using). I find that works best for me and I don't need to carry extra stuff around with me.

    1. I see the appeal of an app. Maybe if I could find an app that allows me to highlight/use stickers and place them as I wish I could be converted one day ;)
