The Liquid Deli, Glasgow
Without even
being overly excited, my last trip to Glasgow was just fantastic! I have
honestly forgotten how many little gems there are in and around the West End of
Glasgow. On my way from the Naked Soup, I was in a bit of a rush to get to city
centre so was ignoring my surroundings. However, when I passed Demijohn, 382
Byres Road, my rush came to a stand still as my attention had been pulled.
Through
Demijohn big window I could see the most marvelous colourful jars,
bigger and smaller bottles and wooden barrels. How could I just pass on
by without popping in? Not a chance, I knew that this was the place where I could
find the perfect, quirky, well thought out and straight from the heart gift for
my dear mum. Did I mention that I am really trying not to buy gifts just
because I have to? I always try to pick something that I think might bring a genuine
smile to someone’s face rather than a polite Thank you, you did not have to.
I would rather just get a funky card, than something that will gather dust
in a cupboard. Even worst if it will be the next gift for forgotten auntie’s
birthday grabbed in hurry on the way out. You should know that my mum has a
rather demanding taste palette, so buying liquors, which I do not know much
about, was a gamble.
As I
stepped into this amazingly quirky shop with a very rustic design I felt from
the first second very welcomed. I really do not enjoy, I am pretty sure I am
not the only one, when a shopping assistant just looks at you with this
unwelcoming grimace as though you just interrupted them. No way I am leaving my hardly earned money there. This just makes
things so much more awkward! However, the lovely shopping assistant from
Manchester just in case her boss is reading this post and wonders if she
should get a bonus, yes she should,
was amazing! She not only made me feel at home but also
tirelessly allowed me to taste any of the liquors, vodkas or whiskies I wanted
to, without even knowing if I am actually going to buy something. Moreover, I
really did not feel like I had to buy something as a thank you for her great
service. Yes, I do that sometimes, when someone is pestering me minus 100
points for being assertive and than I end up with a gift for aunt Dora only
joking auntie.
What else I
loved about Demijohn? Quite simply: the ability to pick the bottle you wanted,
as everything comes in glass vats, which they pour into decorative bottles. I
not only picked the alcohol, but also the bottle design and how much of each
liquor I wanted. They have quite a decent selection there, so no wonder I spend
half of my time picking one. I finally decided to go with two Ying & Yang
200ml bottles. If you want to know what other bottles they have, click here.
Both
bottles had a handwritten note stating what it is inside, and a little message
from me to my mum. Hence, there is no photo of the gift to see since it is
strictly for my mum’s eyes.
Variety of
alcohol is huge, below is a tiny selection of the products that you can pick
from: Bramble Scotch Whisky Liquor, Toffee Whisky Liqueur, Demijohn’s Finest
Blended Scotch Whisky, Aultmore 7 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky,
Ginger Wine, Elderberry Wine, Demijohnnie Gin, Somerset 10 Year Old Cider
Brandy, Somerset Pomona, and more! When it comes to liquors try raspberry vodka
liqueur, chocolate orange cream liquor, and black cherry liquor!
The cherry
on top was a postcard with a recipe for one of the tastiest combinations I have
ever tried: Elderflower Vodka Liqueur 28% and Butterscotch Cream Liqueur 17%. I
know, what you might be thinking, I was thinking maybe not when for the first
time I heard it. Trust me it works. For more recipes click here.
Another
idea, which I really liked and appreciated, which is great for indecisive
people are already prepacked gift suggestions. Medium Demijohn Hamper would
make a perfect wedding gift for liqueurs' lover. They also offer Gin tower, which
is three little bottles creating one big one. Gift ideas are here.
Are you a foodie?
If you like the idea but would prefer a non alcoholic gift, that is not a
problem at all. You can pick from their fruit vinegars’ selection: elderflower
vinegar, bramble vinegar, raspberry vinegar you name it and Demijohn probably
have it. Oils such as Villa Montalbano, or Kabbadates Extra, White Truffle Oil,
Yorkshire Lemon Rapeseed Oil.
Jams and chutneys for example raspberry conserve,
which I have a feeling I would love, I was quite tempted to get a few for
myself. I am a big jam lover and I do have a big chutney lover at home. Apparently,
beetroot and apple chutney, lime chutney, and apricot and orange chutney are
already on his shopping list.
Since I
live for now in Aberdeen, and as far as I know at the moment Demijohn are not
here yet, I am really delighted I can fill the bottles online and get them
delivered. Getting yummy, personalised gifts could not be any easier!
Would you like to receive gift from Demijohn?
