Hot Days & Late Nights | Ortigia, Syracuse, Sicily

Ortigia Syracuse Sicily Travel Guide and Honeymoon Destinationby Iga Berry Travel UK Blog

After a few days in Taormina it was about time to move to the next destination in Sicily. Ready to go, we jumped into our car and headed off to Syracuse (Siracusa) where we stayed in the historic centre, Ortigia.

On the south-eastern coast of Sicily we indulged ourselves in a dining and wining experience, after getting a little bit of advice from our host about what are the best foodie spots. If you are looking for accommodation check I Santi Coronati, that's where we stayed, in case you wonder, yes we paid for the stay there it was not sponsored. The accommodation deserves a special mention as it was perfect for couples like us. By this I mean couples that likes to stay in sometimes during their holidays and just pop out for fresh ingredients from the local markets. However, before I knew it I was sitting at the seafront with a cocktail in my hand rather than sitting in the kitchen.

I would love to share the bar name and address but my Google search was not very helpful. Hopefully in some point the bar name will return to me and I will be able to share it with you as the cocktails were really good and decently priced. Although at first we were very worried as the menu did not have prices next to the cocktails so always check with a waitress first. The best chance for you to find the bar I am talking about is heading to the Fountain of Arethusa.

Then you just look for a seafront bar...

...and you can let your hair down whilst enjoying the cocktails whilst dipping your feet into the Mediterranean sea. Possibly one of the best parts of the honeymoon for me.

Somehow we managed not to find one of the greatness sights in Sicily, the Roman Amphitheatre. I am not sure how we could have miss it. I will blame all of the fruity cocktails and mouth watering sea food that kept us inside the historic city centre, which was gorgeous.

Another ‘must see’ we missed is the legendary Ear of Dionysius, the most famous cave in Siracusa, which too be honest I did not know about till the point of the research for this post. I know, pretty ignorant of me.

I have to admit that for my honeymoon I went awfully unprepared in terms of exploring experiences. I just enjoyed being with my husband and all of the ‘must see’ places were more of a ‘can see if I am in the mood for it’. In Ortigia I was in the mood for just walking aimlessly around the charming streets. During one of the walks we stumbled upon the The Castello Maniace.

Another place we actively looked for were the oldest in Europe, the Jewish Ritual Baths that according to our tour guide were discovered by accident during construction work. We passed the entrance a few times before realising that this is the place we were looking for.

The next day in the morning we visited the recommended, by various travel guides, Ortigia market. It's loud, smelly, and there is a big chance you or someone else will bump into you. If you ask me it is the perfect place for pickpocketing so leave valuables at home.

After my experience in Chiang Mai, where I had the chance to take part in the extremely busy and popular Sunday night market, not many places will be able to surprise me. However, the amount of flies around the fish took me by surprise.

A few stalls continuously were moving pieces of material in the air in attempt to get rid of pesky flies.

The colourful spices took me for a moment to Marrakech, or at least what my imagination of Marrakech is as I never had the chance to go. I wonder why as once I found tickets from Scotland to Morocco for around £40. Today I would not hesitate for a second, tickets would already be mine and I would worry about the details later.

  1. This sounds like such an amazing adventure and it's always great to see more than one place. The Ear of Dionysius looks so interesting. I have always wanted to go to Sicily but not made it yet. I have been to many other places in and around Italy. I love the Italian food as much as the scenery. xx
