Whisky Tasting Event With a Modern Twist

I had the chance to learn about the art of whisky from the best. It was not any ordinary whisky tasting but instead the first ever Google Hangout event organised by Royal Salute. The amazing experience of whisky tasting with experts but from the comfort of my own home, read as: pyjamas bottoms mode on. You can imagine how excited I was.
Prior to the event Royal Salute kindly mailed to me a box full of world class treats including a festive gift of Royal Salute 21 Year Old Gift Pack with Miniature, nosing glasses, and a beautiful globe with golden flakes.

As I took all the goodies out from the box I was instantly drawn into the detailed packaging created with Angela Groundwater. The gift pack has been created as a tribute to the British monarchy’s royal celebrations, and is part of the ‘Royal Celebrations at the Palace’ annual series. Laser cut lid design, deep blue and rich gold, exactly what would catch my eye on the shelf in any store.

Although I could go on about how gorgeous the packaging is forever, for someone like me with marketing experience packaging is a huge part of the consumer experience, we did not meet here to talk about the design. So instead I will let my photography show you how fantastic the design is. I will just say that this gift set will work fantastic as a festive or non-seasonal gift, given its presentation value.

Connection, checked. Logged in, checked. Whisky goodies on the table? Check. I was ready to meet the Royal Salute team.

Within minutes Sandy Hyslop, the director of blending, took me and other participants on tour around the world’s most complex spirit.
What are the top five things that I learned during this whisky tasting?

The casks play an incredibly big role in creating just the right taste for Royal Salute. The natural oils Vanillins, which is found in trees, plays a huge role in creating whisky’s flavor profile. The spirit draws them out from the wood over time, contributing to the unique taste.
Adding water to whisky helps to release and differentiate smells and tastes. For me the taste was going in the direction of caramel and toffee mixed with notes of ginger and cinnamon. There is a soft and sweet spiciness about the 21 year old Royal Salute.

For the quality and continuity each new batch of Royal Salute whisky is mixed with the previous one.

Casks have a limited life span, which means that a lucky someone from the Royal Salute team gets the chance to travel to Spain to find new ones.
Royal Salute 21 Year Old has been created to celebrate the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II.

This is the time when I need you to use your imagination. Whisky has the colour of deep golden amber. I am not going to deny winter is not great for taking photos, but it is fantastic for enjoying a glass of whisky and this is exactly what I have done. Photos can wait when I have such an amber treat in front of me…
